The Importance of Dinner Music
I believe many people underestimate the importance of dinner music at an event. Some DJ's may prefer to think of it as simply background noise while guests are gathering and talking. I believe dinner music can be just as important to the ceremony as the other scheduled events. In this article, I will detail my reasonings behind this statement.
Dinner time can be an opportunity to gage the crowd. I typically use this time to experiment with different genres of music to get a feel to what people will like to hear during the latter parts of the evening. How can I tell just from dinner music? I watch hands and feet. I know that if I see toes tapping during dinner music, that indicates to me that there is a party animal dying to get out. I also look for other hints like silverware tapping or fingers wrapping on the table. I can also get a feel for what music will go over with a crowd by seeing what songs the mothers are bouncing their babies to. In my years in this business I have not seen too many situations where people dance to songs that they don't like. The body language at the dinner table will usually let me know what they will be in the mood for once the cake is cut and the bouquet is tossed.
The other aspect that I enjoy about playing dinner music is that it gives me a chance to play songs that I know that I would not be appropriate during the open dance floor session. As a DJ it breaks my heart when someone will come up to me after I have played the " Cha-Cha Slide" " Bootie Call" and "Mony Mony" and then ask me to play " Margaritaville". Don't get me wrong, I like Margaritaville just as much as the next guy but it doesn't quite fit with the moving and shaking part of the reception. Instead I will play those type of slower songs during dinner knowing that I will not have the chance to play them later. I will also use that time to re-introduce people to songs that they may not have heard in awhile. You might be suprised at how many people come up to me during dinner and thank me for playing songs like " Touch of Grey" from the Grateful Dead or " End of the Line" from the Traveling Wilbury's. It's the little things along those lines that can liven people's spirits and let them know that a good time will be had that night.
I pride myself on my dinner music. even though there are more important parts of the reception to come. This is the opportunity to gage your audience and cater to their diverse music interest.

Don't take my word for it.
“ If you are looking for a DJ who will go out of his way to make your dream reception a reality,
look no further than Tyler Lucas. He knows and loves this business and it shows in his work. I
would hire him again and again and look forward to more receptions where he is involved"

Tyler,
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!! You definitely were a key part to the evening and making
our day just perfect!! I am so happy with everything you did. I truly appreciate all of the time
and effort you put into our wedding. I watched the video tape that Rob did for us and I was
so amazed at how much lots of people danced - a sign of an excellent DJ!!! The music and
dancing is, and will be forever, one of my best wedding day memories!
I'm glad you were part of our special day,
Katherine Schneider
“ Tyler's love and dedication for his profession was very obvious based on our reception.
Even though Tyler lives about 100 miles from our town (Madison Indiana) It seemed as if he
knew our friends as well as we did. All of our friends and family commented on how Tyler
made the evening fun without making himself the center of attention. I'd reccomend Tyler for
any event be it a wedding or a family reunion because your bound to have a great time”.

“ My name is Ami Enzweiler and I am the owner of Enzweiler Wedding Consultant
Services. Tyler is the first person that I refer to clients who are looking for DJ's. I have seen
him perform at various events and have always had positive feedback. Tyler is very
knowledgable about music and has a sense of how a reception should flow. He is able to go
with a schedule but can make changes when the need arises. “fun" and “easygoing” are the
two words that I hear the most when I ask about Tyler's demeanor at a reception. We have
had a successful business relationship for over a year and have no reservation about booking
him for any type of event”.

Thank you so very much for everything. The whole night was
absolutely perfect and you created such a wonderful atmosphere for the
entire evening.

It was beautiful because of people like you and your efforts making the event successful. It
was a pleasure meeting you and if anyone asks me for a DJ I will pass along your name with
my full recommendation.
Thanks again.

It's all about the company
No matter who you are or
what you do, it is always nice
when someone compliments
you on a job well done. This
business has been very
rewarding to me in this regard
and obviously I enjoy a good
compliment just as much as
anyone else. While I do enjoy
the compliments I never
hesitate to tell people that their
guests are who made the event
what it was. Just as every
person is a unique invidual,
every crowd has its own
dynamic. That is why I don't
program a set list and this is
why I never play entirely all
the same songs at every
wedding. My goal is to get a
sense of a crowd and what type
of music they will like. I do my
homework before hand when I
meet with the bride and groom
and ask them about the guests
they have invited. This way I
go in knowing who my
audience is and what they will
respond to.
A perfect example of this came
last weekend at the wedding of
Katherine Dewitt and Jerry
Schneider. It is not too often
that I can get a packed dance
floor playing Stevie Wonder or
selections from the Rocky
Horror Picture show. The
crowd that night was willing to
give me a little bit of room to
see what they were about and
they responded
enthusiastically. I have also had
nights on the other hand where
I can play the electric slide and
not have 5 people get up and
dance. Sometimes the crowd
would rather mingle than dance
which is perfectly acceptable.
The good news is that I spoke
with the bride and groom before
hand and explained to them that
not everyone likes to dance all
the time and some crowds
would rather be more social
amongst themselves.
The beauty of this business
that I'm so honored to be apart
of, is that I get to experience
the joy that people feel from all
walks of life on a very festive
occasion. While I can take
credit for my preparation, I can
honestly give the credit to the
guests who contributed to a
successful night on the
dancefloor.
