The Mind of a DJ

I wanted to take some time and use this space to touch on a subject that I feel can make or break your wedding reception. Alot of people go into a reception with a vision in mind of how their crowds will react to certain things but it hardly happens that way. What normally happens is that the wedding reception takes on a life of its own once the time comes, so you have to check your expectations at the door and play it by ear.

Here's an example. I usually ask the new couple to provide me with a list of music that they think the crowd will respond to. Alot of times it turns into a list of what the bride and groom want to hear and don't want to hear. Invariably, I'll play the list often to an empty dance floor. Instead of being tied to a list, use it as a guideline just to gage the crowd and take things as they come. The best weddings I've done in the ten years of doing this have been weddings where the bride and groom are hands on in the formal festivities of the reception and hands off once the bouquet and garter have been tossed. No one can predict if the crowd is a party crowd or not but at least the door is open to get people out on the floor.
