Wedding Reception Classics

Advice from the Music Maestro!
So you've made it through the formalities and it's now time to kick back and enjoy what's left of the evening. Here are some tips to help plan music that will keep your crowd hopping until last call.
I always tell the couples that I meet with that no two crowds are ever the same. I can play a list of songs at one wedding and keep them dancing all night. I can play the exact same set list at another wedding and not get five people on the dance floor all night. You will know your crowd better than I will so be thinking about what types of music that they enjoy.
2. Stick with what they know
Playing the songs that you jam out to on your ipod might make you happy during your reception but keep the big picture in mind. The idea behind the wedding reception is for everyone to enjoy themselves and then go into the office on Monday and talk about what a great party your parents threw over the weekend. What I learned over the past decade is that there might be a song with a great beat, great melody but if people don't know it, chances are they will not dance. I think it's great to throw one or two obscure songs just to mix things up a bit but definitely lean on the classics. I've listed our most requested songs to serve as a guide for getting people to dance. You might hate line dances but I can assure you that if you stick with the wedding reception classics that I have listed, you will have the dance floor bumpin' all night.
3. Not necessarily alot of time to have the time of your life.
After you get through the formalities there are generally anywhere from two hours to two and a half hours left if you're lucky. The average radio song is three minutes but most wedding songs are about 4. This is because of the line dances, and extended versions of songs that are out there. if you divide two hours by 4 minutes that gives you about 30 songs that you can fit in for the remainder of the reception. Alot of DJ's boast song collections numbering in the tens of thousands but there really is no point of carrying that much when all you will play is 30. Out of those 30, 25 will more than likely come straight from the list that I created. Make sure that you prioritize what you want to hear so that we can get everything in that is important to you and your guests.
By following these three tips, you can rest assured that you and your guests will have the time of your life at your wedding reception.
